Summary
  • Fuel needed: 30.00 L (7.93 gal US)
  • Fuel economy (normalized): 7.50 L/100km
  • Fuel price: $1.50/L
  • Total cost: $45.00
  • Per person (1): $45.00
Breakdown
  • Cost per 100 km: $11.25
  • Cost per km: $0.11
  • Costs assume constant economy; contingency increases fuel needed before pricing.

How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator

This free, client-side Fuel Cost Calculator estimates gas cost for road trips, commutes, and deliveries. Enter your trip distance, vehicle fuel economy, and local fuel price. Toggle Round trip, add a contingency for traffic or AC usage, and optionally split the bill.

  1. Choose units: Metric (km, L) or US (miles, gallons).
  2. Enter distance: One-way distance; enable Round trip to double it.
  3. Set fuel economy: Use L/100km, km/L, or MPG (US). The tool normalizes to L/100km internally.
  4. Add price: Price per liter or per gallon. Pick your currency symbol (e.g., $, €, £, ₨).
  5. Options: Add a contingency % (0–30) and the number of passengers to split costs.
  6. Read results: See fuel needed, total cost, per-person share, and cost per distance.

Formulas

  • Liters needed: liters = (km / 100) × (L/100km) × (1 + contingency%)
  • US MPG → L/100km: L/100 = 235.214583 ÷ MPG
  • km/L → L/100km: L/100 = 100 ÷ (km/L)
  • Total cost: liters × price/L or gallons × price/gal

Tips

  • Use your car’s trip computer average for more realistic economy.
  • High speeds, elevation, cargo, and HVAC increase consumption—add contingency to account for this.
  • If your station lists price per liter but you think in MPG, that’s fine—just enter price/L and set economy to MPG.
